Camping Know How? Part 1

Part 1 - Answers to your frequently asked questions.

Q – Do I need a footprint groundsheet for my tent?

A – No you don’t need one, however we would strongly recommend you invest in a footprint as this will protect the underside and floor of your tent and it will keep your tent clean when packing. It also acts as an insulation barrier from the ground on colder nights.

Q – Should I just stick with the standard tent pegs that came with my tent?

A – No, we recommend that you invest in some hard ground pegs too. These are particularly good for stony or dry ground.

Q – Do I need a carpet for my tent?

A – No you don’t need one, but we would definitely recommend you invest in a carpet, this not only adds a home from home luxury feel but you will certainly feel the difference in terms of insulation from the ground, definitely a worthwhile investment.

Q – Could I still work my TV without EHU?

A – Yes you could, you would need to buy a leisure battery and an inverter. The leisure battery will last around 2 days for TV and lighting.

Q – When pitching my tent should I peg out every Guy line, or just the 4 main corner ones?

A – Regardless of the weather conditions, and even if the weather is fine, you should always peg out every guy line, weather in the UK can change very quickly. And your tent may become damaged if not properly secured.

Q – Do you think I will need a camping toilet for this camping season in 2021 due to Covid?

A – This is a hard one, however it would be advisable to invest in a camping toilet just in case, and it is ideal for those night time toilet visits, this will save you walking across the campsite with your torch during the early hours.

Q – Do I need a special driving licence for my Camping trailer?

A – There are special requirements for towing trailers with your vehicle, the act changed in January 1997 so it depends when you passed your driving test. Consult the website “Towing with a car/GOV.UK.

Q – Could I remove the bedroom pods from my tent to make more room?

A – Yes you could, however we would recommend you leave them in for two key reasons, firstly the bedroom pods assist with reducing condensation on a night while everyone is sleeping and secondly the bedroom pods reduce morning light into the bedroom area enabling you to sleep longer and more comfortable.

Q – Which is the best pump for inflating Airbeam tents - a manual double action pump or electric pump?

A – It all depends on the individual choice, the manual double action hand pump will inflate your tent a lot more quickly, however if you want to reduce effort the electric pump will take the work out of the situation, as you will set the desired PSI and it will do all the work for you.

Q – Do we need to sleep with all the vents open on our tent or should we close them all before bed?

A – We strongly recommend that you keep all vents open during the night whilst sleeping, this will heavily reduce internal condensation in the tent. The Vango airzone system is a great example of this which is fitted on all Vango family tents.

Q – What 5 emergency essentials would you recommend in my camping holdall?

A – 1. First Aid kit, 2. Lighter or matches, 3. Torch, 4. Spare Airbeam Tube or pole sections, 5. Tear aid tape for polyester or polycotton.

Q – When pitching my tent on top of my foot print groundsheet, does it matter if I can still see the edge of my groundsheet sticking out from under my tent?

A – Yes it does matter, rainfall water will collect and pool underneath your tent. Your foot print groundsheet should be totally covered by your tent and not exposed at the edges or corners.
