Our review of Golden Square camping and caravan Park

Updated: May 13, 2022

July 2021

Our trip to Golden Square was in July 2021. We booked this particular campsite due to some other outstanding reviews we had read.

We booked this in May to avoid disappointment. Apparently this site has a reputation for booking up fast especially during the school summer holidays.

Traveling time was around 1 hour 20 minutes for us so it wasn’t too bad.

We decided to book to arrive on the Sunday, pitch time was 1pm and we arrived at the campsite around 12:50pm.

When we arrived we were met at the entrance to the campsite with Colourful flower beds and well manicured border lawns.

Already this place was setting the impression that it was well maintained.

As we drove down the winding path we were halted by a security barrier, however we were assured that our car registration plate would have been already programmed into the ANPR system, sure enough as we approached the barrier it lifted and we were in.

As you drive onto the site you immediately get the impression that this campsite gets looked after and maintained on a daily basis. Grass cut regularly and flower beds around the shop and reception with hanging baskets in full bloom.

When we arrived the weather was very hot and sunny, around 27oC to be exact. Anyway enough of all this, let’s get on with the review of this campsite.

Foreword

So we thought we would provide our group members with a review of this campsite based on our “Campsite Inspectors” blog series. We hope this blog and our many other blogs help you along the way on your camping adventures!

Our review of Golden Square Camping and Caravan Park, Oswaldkirk.

The staff

We were immediately given the impression that the staff here actually value you as a customer, whether you are a tent camper or a motor home camper. The staff are very friendly and helpful and can’t do enough for you, this matters on a large scale campsite such as this, the owners and staff seem to maintain this approach regardless of how successful the campsite is, and this puts a big tick in our book!

The shower & bathroom facilities

This must have to be the campsites biggest bonus! These shower and bathroom facilities have got to be the very best we have used on any campsite so far and we feel that they will take some beating. Your immediate impression upon walking into these facilities is that the owners have invested heavily in these facilities. The shower cubicles are spacious and the shower water temperature is just right, it also strikes you that some thought has gone into these facilities, there are even individual sink cubicles. The showers and toilets are well lit and warm giving you a comfortable feeling as you enter. There is even a private family bathroom with a bath, this can be used at a small cost of £1 into the coin meter. The facilities are cleaned everyday around 11am and are regularly inspected throughout the day, and you can see this is evident when you use them. Clean and well maintained.

The pitches

The pitches are spacious and the grass is well maintained. We often saw empty pitches being mowed with the mini tractor mower. We witnessed an amazing idea on some pitches, as the grass wears away due to constant tent pitching have been replaced with artificial grass (see below). As with most campsites these days fires are not permitted on any pitches.

The grounds & upkeep

It’s very evident across the entire site that all areas receive regular attention, there are many flower beds and manicured grasses areas. It strikes you immediately that the groundskeepers and wardens take a lot of pride in the site and that a good impression matters.

The camp shop

There is a well stocked camp shop should you run out of, or need any essentials. The shop offers beers, wines and spirits and general grocery. The shop also sells camping gas and camping essentials should you need something in an emergency.

Kids play area & other activities

There are two large kids play areas on this site that boast plenty to do for your little ones, climbing, swings and much more. There’s even a football field with goal posts. The site has its very own crazy golf course near to the front children’s play area.

Laundry facilities

This site delivers a full laundry function. Within the laundry area there is a washing machine, tumble dryer and iron for the use of customers at a small cost.

Site security

I touched on security at the beginning of this blog, yes it’s very good. There is a security barrier to the entrance of the site, all areas are well lit at night and the warden make several tours of the entire site several times at night. These tours are obviously for security reasons but are also conducted to keep the noisy/rowdy customers quiet!

Good things about the site

Almost everything!

Not so good things about the site.

There is no bad things about this site, however if we did return we would choose an alternate pitch, we were on C12 and we had a gravel path directly in front of us. However on the upper level called “Mid Terrace” these pitches are set in a field and each pitch has hedge dividers and there is no gravel path running through (see directly below).

Our actual pitch (below)

Would we come back?

Yes we would definitely come back here. Not only is the site well maintained but the staff are attentive and friendly. You get the feeling of being welcomed and important.

Overall rating

Based on our 5 night stay at this campsite and the pleasant stay we had, we have no hesitation ranking this place up in our Top 5 campsites visited with a score of 9.5 out of 10. This is without a doubt a 5 star site and we would highly recommend! Please give it a visit. You won’t be disappointed!

We hope you enjoyed this review! As you know here at the Glampers Camping Club we share all our reviews with both Pitch up.com and Trip Advisor.
