Our trip and Review of Skipsea Sands Holiday Park

Our trip and review of Skipsea Sands Holiday Park

In March 2021, as usual we started looking ahead to our schedule of camping trips for the forthcoming season. One location that appealed to us was a Park Dean site near Driffield called Skipsea Sands Holiday park. We usually don’t bother with the larger national premier sites as they are usually noisy and are often badly run. However we thought we would give this one a go especially for £89 for 5 days with EHU, and to be honest we were pleasantly surprised with the site, we’ll cover that more below!

So it was Wednesday 16th June and as always with all our camping trips we were closely monitoring the weather, and it was looking awful for Friday 18th with heavy rain. We kept the weather monitored throughout the Wednesday and Thursday and unfortunately it did not change.

We hooked up the trailer, packed the car along with the dogs and set off around 11am on the Friday and arrived at Skipsea Sands just after 1pm, as we arrived we drove around the touring part of the site for several minutes before spotting our pitch, number 55, which was a corner pitch. And as predicted it was raining. So we left the dogs in the car and started the unpacking and setting up. And yes by the time we were fully pitched we were like two drowned rats, we decided to take the Rosewood tipi tent and not the Airbeam tent as the Rosewood is a smaller pack size and we need less gear to kit it out.

Once we had set up, we both went for a shower and change of clothes before chilling with a well earned drink.

Now back in 2019 we wrote a review for Vango on the Vango Rosewood Tipi tent (which we named “Rosie”) we have updated our review on this tent at the end of this blog.

We know through sales stats that as a direct result of our marketing that this tent has had a boom in sales during 2019 into 2020 ,and although Vango no longer manufacture this tent on the production line there is still UK stock available, you just need to shop around.

And yes the Rosewood isn’t everyone’s ‘cup of tea’ but it’s ideal for couples especially for short breaks and it is without a doubt, a head turner on the campsite!

So anyway lets start our blog, firstly here is our review of Skipsea Sands Holiday Park: (please note that all our reviews are always sent to the site owners, published on pitch up.com and added to trip advisor).

The arrival

As you arrive at the park you are immediately aware that this is run by one of the big operators in this case Park Dean, as you are met with big signs and commercial advertising of static caravan sales, the entertainment complex stands out as does the amusement arcade and Nisa shop. There is a big reception check in building but due to COVID they are currently operating a contact free check in, so you drive immediately to your pitch upon arrival. The touring section of the site is situated at the rear of the site, and the site is huge, as you can expect from a Park Dean site.

The pitches

The pitches themselves are very spacious and are divided by hedgerows. However the grass on most pitches are bold in places where constant pitching has taken place eroding the grass entirely. Pitching on these is fine in dry weather, however pitching on these in wet weather causes mud. Maintenance of the touring grass pitches was poor and need urgent attention!

Pricing

The pricing of the touring pitches was reasonable, at £89 for 5 nights with full EHU, this included all your passes to the entertainment complex too.

Maintenance of the park

The maintenance of the park in general was overall good in terms of refuse clearance, litter picking and general upkeep, however as stated the grass pitches require urgent attention.

Facilities at the park

The facilities at the park overall were good, the showers and toilets were clean and well maintained and there were two large blocks within the touring section.

The site boasts a well stocked convenience store for any daily essentials but prices aren’t the cheapest. There is a really nice pub and bar on site with an outside seating area. The site also had its own fish and chip kiosk (but be warned it’s expensive).

Dog friendly?

The park is very dog friendly, with a dedicated dog walking area and several chain up

Points outside showers. As with most campsites we noticed quite a few dogs and all were well behaved with responsible owners.

Things to do?

Due to this being a big national site, there was lots to do on site with swimming, show bar entertainment, great coastal walks, pub and bar with outside seating. It has a really good size outdoor children’s play area.

The staff

We found all the staff to be very helpful and very friendly and they couldn’t do enough for us. And although they were all obviously busy most of the time they always made time for new and existing guests.

Safety and security

Upon reviewing the site safety we were quick to discover that there were fire extinguishers and fire points literally everywhere with first aid on hand at regular visibly marked points throughout the site. The security on the site was also good, we actually witnessed this in person and there was a few rowdy girls (at 11pm) and within minutes the security vehicle pulled up and warned them, and this had the desired effect as there was no more noise after this.

EHU

The EHU is 16amp so it’s full EHU, so feel free to take your electrical items including ovens and fridges if you so wish.

Our overall rating and conclusion

The site was overall good in many ways, however the maintenance of the grass pitches on the touring was not satisfactory at all, and better maintenance is needed with this urgently as most pitches need attention by shutting a few pitches off at a time and re turfing the bold patches. This can be done!

So based on everything and applying our 5 star system we give this site a 3 star out of 5. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
